I think this sad accident took place almost entirely due to the hot weather. All of us with dogs, know they can rapidly overheat in hot weather and how important it is to take adequate drinking water with you for them (and of course a dish for same). Most dogs - gun-dogs in particular - love swimming and you can't keep them out of the water. My own little dog, has a favourite walk taking in a stream at the bottom of a meadow opposite here and even though it is seldom deep enough for actual swimming, she does marvellous impressions of being in a bottomless pool, when it's only 10-12 ins deep.

Yes, HW. I can think of cases of owners going into a rough sea after their dogs have been swept in off a breakwater or pebble beach. The dog manages to get out, the owner doesn't. What we do for our pets...

I can just picture her swimming away like mad.
We took Oscar( our first Dal) swimming once. Luckily he was in a harness. We had actually taken our other dog Nina for a swim after she had broken her leg, for therapy, and decided to swim Oscar as well. The silly so and so had to be pulled out of the water looking very worried. He didn't realise that he had to swim!!! He was very good at the doggy paddle once he got the hang of it!. But insisted on sharing the water with us when he got out.

LOL. I've always had larger dog breeds. Lab's and GR's are my favourites, but I've had Shepherds and Rotty's (as working dogs) too. Rattles my mongrel bitch, has a lot of terrier. She looks like a slightly taller Jack Russell. She loves water. Even likes being sprayed by a hose-pipe with a rose on the end. AND! Always seems happy to come and stand close by me whilst she shakes off the water at the end. I have to quickly grab her and roll her in her towel, or get showered myself... I could swear she's laughing!

It's a very sad way to learn a lesson.

They used to use the Corgi, as a cattle herding dog... Though how the dogs kept up with them with legs that short...

Very true. Cattle can't half move when they're running though.

Corgis have a lot of stamina. I remember climbing Goat Fell on Arran, on a very hot day. Our corgi must have climbed it twice at least as he ran ahead, then back to us, then off ahead again. He never ran out of energy.

I don't doubt it, Judith some of these small breeds amaze me. Just look at those little Shelties, Malcolm (Fellman) used to breed. There are working Shelties who run miles just rounding up a flock of sheep. Just thinking of that makes me tired.

I'm lying on my side with my upper branches inside the door of the ice house. If anyone needs to get in or out, feel free to slide down the foliage.
